Rick Yates became Youth Director at Lorena UMC in the Spring of 2019. Born in the Seattle area, he spent much of his early life in the Pacific Northwest. In 1995, Rick moved to Texas when his father became the prison chaplain in Hondo, Texas. From that time on, Rick has been proud to be called a Texan.
During his high school years, he was involved in children’s ministry as a leader of a local boy’s outdoor program. In college while working through his Bachelor’s Degree, Rick worked at the YMCA in their after-school, day camp and outreach programs. One summer, he had the honor of working at a camp for children of incarcerated parents. The experience would later enable him to work with incarcerated youth in San Antonio after graduating in 2008 and while working on his Master’s Degree. In 2015, Rick completed his degree in Counseling Psychology and became a licensed counselor in 2019. In addition to his work at the church, Rick is a mental health professional at a juvenile facility in Mart, Texas.
Rick was graced with meeting his wife, Lauren (who sings in the praise band), in 2014. He and Lauren have two sons, Landon and Benjamin, and way too many pets. He enjoys watching and playing sports, playing guitar, jogging, board and video games, and raising his family with his wife.
